Statement in response to incidents at the CCFC promotion event

Published Thursday, 11 June 2020

Joint statement from Cllr George Duggins and Cllr Abdul Khan, Leader and Deputy Leader of Coventry City Council in response to incidents at the CCFC promotion event on Tuesday evening

Council House

“We want to reaffirm our commitment to condemning and eradicating racism in any form in Coventry.

“It won’t be tolerated in our city.

“We wish to stress that Tuesday’s unofficial celebration of the Sky Blues promotion was a largely peaceful event.

“The policing of the event was carefully managed. It was a small minority of people who engaged in criminal behaviour and we support the police’s thorough investigation of possible hate crimes.

“The vast majority of the city pride itself on our diversity and the strength it brings to communities and individuals.

“That’s why we will not allow these actions to tarnish the positive values and reputation that the city has built over many decades.

“Our objective as a Council and working with partners, is to make all communities feel part of Coventry and feel safe in the city.

“We encourage anyone with any video evidence to make this available to the Police.”
