Job Shop redundancy support success

Published Tuesday, 15 September 2020

Mark was introduced to The Job Shop in July when he was going through the redundancy process after 22 years of employment in the warehousing sector.

The Council’s Employer Hub Team worked with Mark’s company to create a structured virtual timetable of employment and skills support for the employees being made redundant, including a range of partners involved in the Coventry and Warwickshire Redundancy Support Service.

The virtual redundancy session enabled Mark to hear directly from each partner organisation offering training opportunities and employment support at an extremely anxious time.

The session also involved a short presentation from the Employer Hub highlighting a range of local vacancies available as the team engages with an extensive range of employers across the city.

Mark was very interested in a Warehouse Operative vacancy mentioned within the presentation as it was local to him and in a sector where he felt comfortable with 22 years' previous experience.
Following on from the redundancy session Mark was introduced to Job Coach Martina who was able to register him with The Job Shop service and provide ongoing one-to-one careers guidance, including further information on the particular vacancy he had expressed an interest in.

He was anxious about online job searching and creating job applications with no email address, smartphone or computer and felt getting another job would be difficult for him with little technical knowledge. Mark’s Job Coach Martina was able to discuss these concerns and refer him to a partner organisation offering IT Skills Training to boost his confidence.

Prior to registering with The Job Shop Mark had been unsuccessful in gaining job interviews or even receiving feedback from employers, therefore, Martina supported Mark to create a new CV highlighting his dedicated work history.

Within just one week of the Coventry and Warwickshire Redundancy Support Session, Mark was successful in gaining an interview with a local warehousing company advertising through The Job Shop and was given the opportunity to undertake a week’s paid work trial. Mark was successful in gaining the Warehouse Operator position and has now been in employment for almost a month.

Mark said: “The Redundancy session made me feel like I wasn’t alone, and it bought home how much I needed help getting online. The session gave me confidence and showed me there is help out there for people going through redundancy.”

The employer said: “Kirsten from the Employer Hub has proactively engaged with our company to get the right requirements for our job vacancies. In addition, our advisor listened carefully to our feedback and took actions to pre-screen applications.

"We are a new start-up business in Coventry and the Employer Hub Team has gone the extra mile to provide further business support and potential funding with us.”
