Musical reminder to stay safe

Coventry City Council has teamed up with a talented young singer for a new approach to spreading the social distancing and stay safe messages in the fight against coronavirus.

The new message will be going out this week across social media.

It is a COVID-related take on a classic song that everyone knows – and you’ll soon be singing along to the words.

Gloria Gaynor’s seventies’ hit ‘I Will Survive’ is a platinum seller that celebrates personal strength. Now it is a timely reminder to everyone to stay safe during the COVID-19 crisis.

City teenager Caitlin McCarthy, who is signed to Big Help Music, has provided her undoubted singing talents to help create a version relevant to the issues facing the world today.

With lyrics such as “We can all live with COVID by our side” and “We need to test and trace, keep a two metre space”, there is no excuse for forgetting the key safety messages.

Fifteen-year-old Caitlin is an up-and-coming talent on the local music scene and appeared at the Godiva Festival in 2019 on the BBC introducing stage. She was listed in the top five best moments from opening night and named as ‘one to watch for the future’ from the whole festival.

Liz Gaulton, Director of Public Health at Coventry City Council, said: “COVID-19 is still with us and we all need to continue to be vigilant and do everything we can to stop its spread. We need to keep finding new and entertaining ways to remind people of important messages such as social distancing, and we think this song from Caitlin will certainly do that.

“Caitlin has been fantastic and gave her time for free as she feels it is such an important cause - she said she was just delighted to help.

“As we saw at Godiva, she’s a very talented young singer and I’m sure everyone will love her version and we’ll hear a lot of people singing and humming ‘I Will Survive’ behind their facemasks when they’re out and about in the city.”

Caitlin said: “It was a delight to be asked to sing this uplifting song which reminds us all that COVID-19 is still amongst us.

“As a young adult myself it has been such a strange time in the world, however, this version of Gloria Gaynor’s ‘I will survive’ is to remind you that we are all in the same situation and If we stick to the Government’s advice on social distancing and wearing masks we will all be safe as we return to some form of normality.”
