Development of a second office building at Friargate is set to take a major step forward this week with contractors beginning the onsite work.
Following a comprehensive tender process Bowmer and Kirkland has been appointed by the Friargate Joint Venture to deliver Two Friargate and work has started on site this week.
Two Friargate will be located next to Coventry Railway Station, which is currently undergoing its own multi-million-pound development and is one of the busiest in the UK. It will also be within walking distance of Coventry City Centre which is also benefiting from significant investment.
It’s estimated that the scheme will create up to 700 jobs during the construction and work has started to talk to businesses that might want to take part or all of the building – creating further jobs.
Cllr Jim O’Boyle, Cabinet Member for Jobs and Regeneration, said: “I’m really pleased that work is underway. There will be jobs created during the construction phase and then even more jobs when the building is occupied.
“We want to create jobs and opportunities for local people because what we know is that having a job changes lives. We want more businesses to invest to in our city, to relocate here or to grow here and providing the right kind of accommodation is an important part of that.
“Located right next to the station with great connections to the rest of the country and a short walk from the city centre, Friargate has already become home to the Financial Ombudsman Service and Homes England, showing it is an attractive proposition for business. And I have no doubt that there will be interest in this new building too. So work is underway, the construction team is on site and soon people will see it coming out of the ground.”
Commenting on the news the Leader of Coventry City Council, Cllr George Duggins said, “This kind of investment is always welcome and always important. But its amplified by the current pandemic as we need to do all we can for this city and the people who live here so when we finally emerge out of the other side we are in a strong position.
“Coventry has always been ambitious, and we have always driven change so its no surprise to me that developments like this are proceeding. This project will provide and support jobs in the city and that’s very good news indeed.”
The development of this second office building has been made possible thanks to a £51.2m grant from the West Midlands Combined Authority which will be complimented by funding from the Council worth up to £17m.

“This major development for the city demonstrates the importance of investment in projects throughout the West Midlands that support economic growth and create new jobs for people across the region.”
Two Friargate which is to be owned by the Council, will contain 134,000 sqft of lettable Grade A office space. The office space will be of a premium standard with state-of-the-art technological infrastructure, environmentally friendly and easily adaptable in order to suit any future occupiers.
