Public participation crucial to city planning processes

A senior councillor is encouraging residents and organisations to feedback on a consultation on participation in local planning applications and city planning policy.

The Council intends to update its Statement of Community Involvement (SCI) but before it does it will open a six-week consultation starting on 15 February to enable communities to help shape the revised document.

The SCI will set out how the Council will involve local communities, businesses and other organisations in the planning process to ensure that everyone has a chance to have a say.

Cllr David Welsh, Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities said: “It is really important that the views of residents are considered as part of the planning process.

“Effective involvement in the planning process will help to ensure that planning policies and decisions on planning applications will better reflect the needs and concerns of local communities.”

Coventry City Council is encouraging communities to provide feedback on its new draft Statement of Community Involvement.

Cllr David Welsh added: “The planning process is complex and has to comply with relevant legislation which sets out how people can take part. Our new Statement of Community Involvement will explain the process and how we will encourage our communities to engage in decisions which affect them. We welcome feedback on our draft version of this document’.

The consultation will take place between 15 February 2021 and 29 March 2021.

The updated SCI and details on how to respond to the consultation can be viewed on the Council’s website.
