Coventry leads net zero charge with up to 400 EV charging points

Coventry residents will have access to hundreds of public electric vehicles charging points as the city looks to bolster efforts to meet its net zero ambitions

Coventry City Council has signed a contract with Connected Kerb to install and maintain 400 charging points by 2023.

The project follows a successful pilot scheme in 2020, in which 30 charging points were installed in the city.

The charging points, partially made from recycled materials, will also include parking sensors and can potentially host other technologies such as 5G and air quality sensors as the drive towards smart cities gathers pace.

The installations will be fully funded by Connected Kerb while any profits will be shared with the Council.

Cllr Jim O'Boyle, Cabinet Member for Jobs, Regeneration and Climate Change, at the Council, said: "We're really excited to be expanding Coventry's EV infrastructure network at a time when action not words are needed to help reach net zero.

"A better charging infrastructure will help many residents feel more confident about making the switch to electric vehicles.

"We chose Connected Kerb for their vast experience and expertise in deploying on-street residential EV infrastructure.

"This Is an important example of the public and private sector coming together to encourage more residents to consider using electric vehicles and to reduce their carbon footprint when travelling to, from and around the city."

Coventry has the most public EV charging points per head of population outside London. It already has 460 charging points so the announcement will mean the total number of charge points in the city will rise to 860 by 2023.

"Over 60 per cent of the UK population is unable to charge their vehicle at home so providing long-lasting on-street charging infrastructure is essential if mass EV uptake is to become a reality.

"I am confident that the deployment could set a blueprint for other cities in making electric vehicle charging sustainable, affordable and accessible to all."
