Coventry’s annual Christmas Lights Switch On returns this week promising festive, family-fun for all.

The event, which is taking place on Wednesday 17 November, will be based on a ‘Coventry Stars’ theme and will be hosted and presented by BBC CWR. It will showcase some great local musical talent and will be set beneath a glittery canopy of star-themed lights in Broadgate.

The live entertainment begins at 5:30pm with a magical musical drumming parade led by the amazing Spark! drummers. The parade will take the audience on a unique journey around Broadgate and the new-look city centre.

After that, audiences will be treated to some fantastic live performances from some of Coventry’s finest up and coming musical talent. From solo acts like Levi Washington to traditional choirs and the return of DJ Santa, they’ll be something for everyone.

Beyond the music, the Freeman Dance group will be bringing their own brand of kinetic choreography to the stage for all to enjoy. For the grand finale, there will be rooftop fireworks display that culminates in a switching on of the lights.

Cllr Abdul Salam Khan, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Events, Coventry City Council said:

“The annual Switch On is almost here and looking at the line-up for this year’s event, I’m sure it’ll be as popular as ever.

“The ‘Coventry Stars’ theme that we’re going with this year not only gives us a great opportunity to celebrate and showcase the wonderful local talent we have in the city, but also to shine a light on some people in the city who have done special things to make a difference during such a challenging time for everyone.

“This is going to be a brilliant event for all the family, so I encourage everyone to come along on Wednesday and join us in getting in the festive spirit.”

Gareth Roberts , Executive Editor BBC CWR said “We’re really looking forward to hosting Coventry’s switch on. Trish Adudu and Brody Swain from BBC CWR will be on stage getting the party started and bringing some extra special star surprises and if you can’t make it to the event we’ll be bringing you live updates on BBC CWR from 5pm ”

In addition to the lights in Broadgate, Coventry BID has partnered with the Council to deliver fantastic Christmas lighting across the city centre. After the Switch On, the BID will be lighting up key areas including Upper Precinct, Smithford Way and Market Way, ensuring that the city centre is spectacularly lit up ready for the festive season.

Trish Willetts, Coventry BID Director said: “We’re thrilled to be bringing beautiful festive lighting to key areas of the city centre to complement the canopy on Broadgate. The lights switch-on marks the start of a great festive season for Coventry city centre including a fabulous Christmas market in our wonderful festive cabins. The golden quarter is a key time for our brilliant businesses, and we’re delighted to have invested in supporting them this festive season.”

To encourage people to take advantage of late-night shopping in the city centre, the Council will also be offering free parking at certain times in its city centre car parks. These specific times are as follows:

  • On Wednesday’s, people will be able to park for free after 3pm in all Council city centre car parks. This offer starts on 17 November to tie-in with the Switch On.
  • People will be able to park for free in all council car parks on Sunday 19 December. This offer is valid between the hours of (08:00 -18:00)
  • In the week before Christmas, people can park for free after 3pm until 9pm in all council car parks. This offer begins on Monday 20 December.

Cllr Patricia Hetherton, Cabinet Member for City Services, said: “The Switch On is always such a popular event in the city’s events calendar and we want to encourage people to come along and enjoy it. That’s one of the reasons we’re offering free parking after 3pm in all city centre council car parks on the day.

“The other reason is that we know how hugely important the Christmas period is to many city centre businesses and that’s why we’re extending the festive parking offer for later night shoppers every Wednesday after the switch on.

“We’ll also be extending the offer in the week leading up to Christmas Day to attract even more shoppers and visitors into the city centre. It’s been a tough year for the traders in the city centre this year and we want to do our bit to encourage everyone to shop local.”

The ‘Coventry Stars’ Switch On event is being organised by Coventry City Council and presented by BBC CWR, with additional funding and support for city centre lighting through the Coventry BID.
