Coventry’s new Ice Trail brings frosty festive fun to the city centre

This Saturday, Coventry City Centre will be transformed into an arctic wonderland thanks to the arrival of eight intricate ice sculptures.

The sculptures, which all take inspiration from the festive period, form part of a magical public art display which aims to mark the Christmas period and encourage residents into the city.

Visitors to the city centre will be able view this frosty, festive display completely free of charge. The sculptures will be on display on Market Way, Smithford Way and in Upper Precinct on Saturday 27 November between the hours of 12pm -6pm. They will be illuminated, so they are visible after dark.

People are encouraged to come along, admire the sculptures and take pictures with them. Afterwards we’re asking everyone to get in the holiday spirit by sharing their pictures with us by using the #CovIceTrail.

In addition to the display, there will be a live carving of one of the sculptures in Upper Precinct at 1pm. This demonstration will offer viewers a chance to have a behind the scenes look at how these spectacular sculptures are made.

Cllr Abdul Salam Khan, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Events said: “We’re really pleased to be able to host these magical ice sculptures here in Coventry. They look fantastic and I’m sure they’ll bring some wonderful festive cheer to the city.

“These sculptures will only be here in Coventry for one day though, so I encourage everyone to come into the city centre and have a look at them. You won’t be disappointed.”

The Ice Trail is just one event that’s happening in the city centre this winter. While visiting the sculptures, residents are encouraged to visit and enjoy many of Coventry’s attractions, shops, bars and restaurants. Of course, the City of Culture Trust’s Coventry Glides event also kicks off this weekend. Coventry Glides offers residents a chance to skate in the Cathedral’s iconic setting and tickets can be purchased from the City of Culture website..
