"The city and the people of Coventry are deeply saddened at the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
The Queen was a much-loved monarch, who visited our city many times over her long reign and she will be greatly missed.
Our thoughts are with the King and the Royal Family at this time.
Queen Elizabeth was known for her sense of duty and devotion and she ruled over our country at a time of enormous change with great grace and dignity.
As a young Princess, she first visited our city in 1948 to open the new Broadgate and lay the foundation stone for the new shopping precinct as the city recovered from the devastation of war, and she returned many times.
She honoured our city by attending the consecration of the new Cathedral in 1962, visiting the newly-built Walsgrave Hospital in 1970, Jaguar in the 1990s and many other occasions.
She was always greeted warmly by the people of our city, who I know feel a great sense of loss today.
As a mark of respect we will be flying the Union Flag at half-mast until the national mourning period is over and people are invited to lay flowers at the altar end of the Cathedral Ruins.
Books of Condolence will be opened at the Council House and the Cathedral, as well as a virtual book of condolence on the Council website and on the Royal website.
The Cathedral will also host a Service of Remembrance and details will be released in the near future.
The Lord Mayor will be reading the official Accession Proclamation to mark the beginning of our new King’s reign on Sunday 11 September from the steps of the Council House in Earl Street.
We know that people around the city will want to pay their own personal tributes and we will keep you informed of further details as soon as we have them.
As a mark of respect, some public and civic events will be cancelled in the coming days.
Today is a very sad day for our country, but while we mourn our loss, we also remember the great joy the Queen brought to many.
We remember a lifetime of service and dedication and we give thanks that Her Majesty was a part of our lives.”
