We invite you to our yearly online event on Monday, 22 September 2025, 1-3pm. Guest speakers will discuss the importance of involving local residents at every stage of the research process.
We often hear the word “research,” but it can mean different things to different people. In this webinar, guest speakers will share real-life examples – big and small – of how they’ve worked alongside local people to shape and guide research. You’ll hear what public involvement really means, why it matters, and the importance of thoughtfully managing residents’ expectations along the way.
Residents who are part of the HDRC Public Voices Group and HDRC community researchers will take the stage and share their experiences of being part of research. We’ll also hear from the Central England Law Centre about their recent research on understanding legal needs in Coventry, to support access to justice for marginalised communities.
No previous knowledge or experience is needed – just curiosity and an interest in learning. Everyone is welcome to join the conversation, and there will be a panel Q&A at the end for your questions and ideas.
Talks to be delivered include:
-
Professor Sir Michael Marmot – will discuss how the Institute of Health Equity research work is making a difference nationally.
-
Professor Sophie Staniszewska – Outlines what good public involvement in research looks like, drawing on her leadership of the PPI and Patient Experiences Programme at the University of Warwick.
-
Richard Grant, Public Contributor – Shares how to thoughtfully manage residents’ expectations in research projects.
-
Associate Professor Tara Mulqueen – Presents research with the Central England Law Centre on the vital role of trusted community organisations in helping people recognise and respond to legal needs early.
-
Sinead Ouillon, Coventry University – Showcases the Citizen Social Science course and the benefits of upskilling members of the public, with community researchers sharing their own experiences.
-
Jessica Weeks, HDRC Public Involvement Officer – Introduces the HDRC Public Voices Group, with members reflecting on their journey and involvement in research.
