NIHR. HDRC. Coventry HDRC’s ‘So What?’ Club 27 August 2025.

The HDRC is on a mission to help Coventry City Council (CCC) become more research active. Our sessions are designed to support you in reading, critiquing and applying the findings of research papers.

We demonstrate the importance of using academic literature to inform evidence-based decisions in your field and build your confidence in addressing real-life issues related to the broader determinants of health.

This August's 'So What?' Club was hosted by James Bell, Public Health Registrar at CCC, and Cameron Ley, Research Fellow in Evidence Synthesis for the HDRC. James presented a paper examining the role of alcohol in the link between national football (soccer) tournaments and domestic abuse in England.

Attendees had the opportunity to discuss the findings of the study and whether the methods were appropriate for answering the posed questions. We then talked about how the findings can be applied to work here in Coventry.

We were pleased to welcome 28 attendees. Those in attendance included representatives from voluntary, community and social enterprises (VCSEs), as well as from various Coventry City Council directorates.

Take a look at the paper and, if you are interested take a look at the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme checklists to assess a paper's quality and usefulness.

The next 'So What?' Club will take place on 24 September 2025 from 9:30am to 10:30am. Everyone is welcome to come along, regardless of their experience of academic research. To register, please complete the online form.  You will then receive a calendar invite.
