“Experiences of Domestic Abuse Support Among African and Caribbean Heritage Black Women" in England and Wales.

The Coventry Health Determinants Research Collaboration hosted its latest ‘So What?’ club of the year.

We demonstrate the importance of using academic literature to inform evidence-based decisions in your field and build your confidence in addressing real-life issues related to the broader determinants of health.

This October, as part of Black History Month, the 'So What?' Club was hosted by Sandra Simpson, Social Worker at Coventry City Council and Research Engagement Lead for West Midlands Association of Directors of Adult Social Services (ADASS), along with Cameron Ley, Research Fellow in Evidence Synthesis for the Coventry HDRC.

Sandra presented a mixed-methods research paper, exploring “Experiences of Domestic Abuse Support Among African and Caribbean Heritage Black Women" in England and Wales. The research highlighted important service gaps in how well service providers responded to cultural differences and the needs of those affected by domestic abuse. It found that governmental and third sectors need to make sure that the lived experiences of survivors are used to improve future services, policies and interventions.

Attendees had the opportunity to discuss the findings of the study and whether the methods were appropriate for answering the posed questions. We then talked about how and if the findings can be applied to work here in Coventry.

We were pleased to welcome 22 attendees, including individuals from Coventry City Council’s Public Health, Digital Inclusion, Safeguarding, and Estate teams, as well as Coventry residents.

Take a look at the paper, and, if you are interested take a look at the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme checklists to assess a paper's quality and usefulness.

The next 'So What?' club will take place on Wednesday, 26 November 09:30am-10:30am. Everyone is welcome to come along, regardless of their experience of academic research. To register, please complete the online form. You will then receive a calendar invite.
