A brief Introduction to NIHR funding. Watch the video!
This webinar provided an accessible introduction to the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), exploring what the NIHR is, why funding health and social care research matters, and the types of projects it supports. Jane Whitehurst and Richard Grant, Coventry HDRC Public Co-Applicants, walked us through the research funding application process, from initial idea to successful bid, and discussed what makes a strong application.
A key focus was on the importance of public involvement, why engaging people with lived experience improves research quality, builds trust, and ensures real-world impact. We also showcased examples on bids we wrote (Coventry HDRC), including the BENEFICIAL study on home energy efficiency and health, and a pilot study on the mental health and economic impacts of employment support.
Whether attendants were new to research funding or interested in contributing to meaningful projects, this session helped them understand how NIHR funding works and how the public can play an active role in shaping research.
