Coventry HDRC is involved in university research to explore how nature‑based activities can support healthier ageing.

A new qualitative evidence review funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research Evidence Synthesis Programme, was carried out by a team of university researchers, including a Coventry City Council based HDRC Research Fellow. They looked at the factors that affect how older adults access green health prescribing in primary care (preprints: publication expected soon). 

Green health prescribing involves recommending activities like walking, gardening, and outdoor groups to support wellbeing. New research shows these can improve health, social connection, and quality of life for older adults. 

However, many face barriers such as limited access to green spaces, transport issues, safety concerns, and gaps in local provision. Healthcare professionals may also lack time, awareness, or confidence to make referrals. 

Access is fundamental, and safe local green spaces, group activities, and strong community programmes can make a real difference.
