As part of Get Online Week 2023, #CovConnects teamed up with Sky Blues in the Community to organise digital taster sessions for year 8 students at President Kennedy School.

Get Online Week, which took place 16-22 October, is an annual digital inclusion campaign organised by national charity Good Things Foundation.

The week was marked in Coventry thanks to a number of events hosted by #CovConnects and its partners. One of those events was a ‘Youth Aspiration Day’ at President Kennedy School.

The event was held on Tuesday 17 October and gave Year 8 Students from the school the opportunity to learn new digital skills by engaging in a number of taster sessions. All the activities were geared at helping the students learn more about a potential career in the digital field.

Taster sessions on the day included podcast creation with Coventry University’s FabLab, learning to code through Lego Robotics with the University of Warwick and an engaging talk from Virgin Media O2.

The day was also supported by the West Midland’s Combined Authority Connected Services Programme. The programme donated 20 devices to the Council’s #CovConnects Device Bank which were then distributed to Sky Blues in the Community.

This ‘Youth Aspirations Day’ was the first part of a longer-term programme  planned with Sky Blues In The Community, with follow up sessions planned to build on the skills learned by the Year 8.

Craig White, Operations/Inclusion Manager for Sky Blues in the Community told us: "During Get Online Week, the project ignited the spark of curiosity in our young people, empowering them to taste and shape the future of technology and boldly stride into a digital realm where their dreams unfold as the architects of innovation. The young people Embraced the boundless possibilities of the digital age during Get Online Week, as youth aspirations light the path to a future where innovation knows no bounds."
