Horse Riding, Equine Wellbeing & Outdoor Development Programme
Course Outline
A therapeutic equine‑based programme designed to support emotional regulation, confidence, resilience, communication and personal development. Learners engage in structured horse riding sessions, stable management, grooming, groundwork and nature‑based wellbeing activities. The programme blends equine‑assisted learning, SEMH‑informed practice and outdoor development to help young people build trust, responsibility, patience and positive coping strategies.
Course Modules
Introduction to equine wellbeing Stable safety, PPE & horse handling Grooming, feeding & basic stable care Horse riding fundamentals — mounting, balance, rein control Walk, trot & controlled movement (adapted to ability) Groundwork skills — leading, communication, trust building Emotional regulation through equine interaction Nature‑based wellbeing & outdoor grounding Confidence building & resilience through achievement Teamwork & communication in shared equine tasks Responsibility, routine & compassionate care Environmental awareness around equine settings Final riding challenge, skill review & progression pathways

Admissions Criteria
Suitable for pupils requiring SEMH support, confidence building, outdoor regulation, therapeutic intervention or alternative provision pathways. No prior horse riding experience required.
Staff Experience
Equine mentors and youth practitioners trained in SEMH, trauma‑informed practice, safeguarding, equine wellbeing and safe horse handling.
