Course aim:

To be able to successfully complete a range of manual handling techniques with and without the use of equipment, safely and in a way that promotes the independence, dignity, and respect of service users.

Course outcomes:

Demonstrate the importance of correct manual handling techniques to ensure the safety and well-being of both the individual being moved, and the caregiver.

Maintain good posture and body mechanics to prevent musculoskeletal injuries and strain during manual handling tasks.

Apply a range of manual handling techniques, including lifting, transferring, and positioning, while considering the specific needs and limitations of different individuals.

Utilise equipment and aids effectively to enhance the safety and comfort of both the individual being moved and the caregiver.

Implement effective communication to promote cooperation and trust between the caregiver and the individual during the moving and handling process, and demonstrate effective teamwork and collaboration.

Identify and assess potential risks and hazards associated with moving and handling people and implement appropriate control measures to minimise the risk of accidents or injuries.

Evaluate and reflect on personal performance in moving and handling people, identifying areas for improvement and ongoing professional development.

Techniques will include:

Standing and sitting in a chair
Assistance to walk
Re-positioning in a chair using Handling belts and Slide-sheets
Re-positioning in a bed
Hoisting and slinging
Standing aids
Using a Mangar Elk from a confined space

NOTE:

Refresher training is delivered within your own service area. This course is designed specifically for new starters. In addition all staff must have completed both of the following online courses:

1. Manual Handling

2. Manual Handling: Moving People

Before attending the practical Induction, and/or their in-service refresher training.
