Key Steps and Lifeskills Challenge
Course Outline
- Flexible (half-term, termly, or year-long)
- Attendance: 1–2 sessions per week (customised by school)
- Group Size: 1-to-1 or small groups (max. 4)
- Assessment: Portfolio with visual evidence, tutor notes, and child-friendly feedback
- Learning Style: Hands-on, sensory-informed, play-based for KS1; task-led and reflective for KS2
- Additional Benefits ASDAN certificates boost confidence and provide positive records for reports
- Close liaison with SENCOs and school leads to embed progress into EHCP/ILP plans

Course Modules
Course Units and Levels Qualification Level: ASDAN Key Steps (Entry to Level 1)

ASDAN Lifeskills Challenge (non-accredited units for KS1 learners)
Core Units for KS1 and KS2
- Learners Personal Development and Communication Taking
- Turns and Listening Speaking in a Group
- Understanding and Following Rules Exploring Feelings and Making Choices
- Learning Skills and Routines Working with an Adult Completing a Task Independently
- Asking for Help Moving Between Tasks Calmly

Functional Skills and Enrichment (Embedded)
- Maths – sorting, matching, counting for KS1; budgeting and measurement in KS2
- English – recognising symbols and words (KS1); writing about experiences (KS2) Digital – using devices safely and creatively, researching careers (KS2)

Vocational Taster Activities Adapted to age group and ability, examples include:
- Mini Hair and Beauty Activity: Dressing dolls, learning about hygiene
- Sports and Fitness Challenge: Simple relay games, movement tracking
- Mini Construction Task: Lego/model building with instructions
- Creative Play/Enterprise: Make and sell a simple product (e.g. bookmarks, cards)

Each activity helps learners link real-world themes to their learning.

Student Expected Outcomes
Children completing the programme will:
- Achieve ASDAN Key Steps and Lifeskills Challenge certificates
- Build confidence in communicating with adults and peers
- Develop skills in: Following instructions Teamwork and sharing Managing emotions and behaviour
- Create a personal portfolio of achievements, supporting: Early EHCP targets
- Transition readiness for Key Stage 2 or secondary
- Experience early career-awareness activities through themed vocational taster tasks
- Re-engage positively with structured learning in small groups or 1:1

Admissions Criteria
To join the Primary programme, learners must:
- Be in Key Stage 1 (ages 5–7) or Key Stage 2 (ages 7–11)
- Be referred by a primary school, local authority, parent/carer, or SEND professional
- Attend an initial meeting to: View the environment and activities Meet the key staff Identify any specific needs (e.g. EHCP, behaviour plan, transition support)

This provision is suitable for children with SEND, SEMH, or those needing early intervention or structured transition support.
Staff Experience
Our staff are experienced in:
- Working with both KS1 and KS2 learners, including those with neurodiverse conditions, attachment issues, or developmental delay
- Delivering adapted curriculum content in early years-friendly formats
- Supporting learners with communication and sensory needs
- Using trauma-informed, play-based, and nurture group strategies
- Working in close partnership with schools, carers, and support services

Minimum Group Size The minimum group size is 1 learner, allowing for bespoke 1-to-1 tuition where group delivery is not suitable. We aim to group learners when appropriate, but never exceed 4 per session.
