Course Outline
This course is designed for young people with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) who are preparing for adulthood. The course is flexible and tailored for 1:1 delivery, ensuring that each student's unique needs, goals, and pace are met. The focus of the course is to equip students with the necessary skills to transition into adulthood confidently, covering areas such as independence, work readiness, relationships, self-care, and travel. The course includes travel training where appropriate, helping students build the skills needed to travel safely and independently.
Course Modules
The course covers the following key areas:
Introduction to Preparing for Adulthood:
● Understanding what ""adulthood"" means and the skills needed to navigate personal, social, and work life confidently.
● Discussing the different aspects of adulthood, including responsibilities, work, relationships, and independence.
Developing Independence and Life Skills:
● Learning essential life skills such as cooking, cleaning, personal hygiene, and managing daily routines.
● Focusing on practical tasks like meal planning, maintaining a tidy living space, and managing time effectively.
● Setting realistic goals to increase independence at a pace suited to the student’s individual needs.

Travel Training:
● Introducing the basics of safe, independent travel, including understanding public transportation options like buses, trains, and trams.
● Teaching the student how to plan a journey, read timetables, and use travel apps or maps.
● Practicing safe travel skills, including how to navigate different environments, cross roads safely, and identify important landmarks.
● For more complex travel needs, providing step-by-step travel training to ensure the student feels confident and comfortable navigating local routes.
● Building skills to manage travel anxiety and prepare for unexpected situations during travel.

Managing Finances:
● Learning about budgeting, saving, and managing money to help the student become more financially independent.
● Discussing essential skills like using a bank account, budgeting for essentials (e.g., food, travel), and understanding costs associated with living independently.
● Practicing real-world money management, including counting money, understanding prices, and handling basic financial transactions.

Career and Work Skills:
● Exploring career options and understanding the necessary skills and qualifications for different jobs.
● Building job readiness skills, such as writing a CV, preparing for interviews, and learning work-related communication.
● Helping the student identify their strengths, interests, and possible career paths, with a focus on practical skills and vocational training.

Building Healthy Relationships and Social Skills:
● Discussing the importance of healthy relationships with friends, family, and peers.
● Teaching social skills like effective communication, active listening, and understanding social cues.
● Encouraging the student to practice navigating social situations and build relationships in a supportive environment.

Health and Wellbeing in Adulthood:
● Learning how physical and mental health contribute to overall wellbeing.
● Discussing the importance of exercise, healthy eating, sleep, and managing stress.
● Providing strategies to help the student maintain good health, such as relaxation techniques, regular physical activity, and mindful eating.

Understanding Rights and Responsibilities:
● Educating the student about their legal rights as an adult, including access to education, employment, and healthcare.
● Discussing personal responsibilities in areas like paying bills, managing contracts, and voting.
● Helping the student understand how to advocate for themselves and seek help when needed.

Housing and Living Arrangements:
● Exploring housing options available to young adults, including independent living, shared housing, or supported living.
● Teaching the student how to manage a home, pay rent, and maintain a living space.
● Helping the student explore their options for housing, from understanding rental agreements to the basics of household maintenance.

Self-Advocacy and Decision Making:
● Encouraging the student to take ownership of their decisions and advocate for themselves in various situations.
● Practicing decision-making skills, such as evaluating options, understanding consequences, and seeking advice when needed.

Additional Notes
Our courses are delivered over a minimum of 10 hours per week for at least 12 weeks, meeting the guided learning hours required for NCFE Level 1 or 2 qualifications. There is no limit on the number of 12-week blocks a student can complete.
