The Fundamentals in Health and Wellbeing programme for children in Key Stages 1 and 2 focuses on building essential life skills through a nurturing, inclusive, and sensory-rich approach.
With an emphasis on developing foundational self-awareness and personal wellbeing, the course empowers learners to understand and manage their own health through play-based and imaginative learning.
By introducing the concept of “helping roles” in society, learners are encouraged to explore professions such as nurses, carers, and paramedics through interactive, accessible activities that promote early vocational awareness.
Alongside this, the course supports the development of independence, emotional expression, and key communication skills in line with each learner’s individual needs. The core curriculum is designed and delivered by qualified nurses and healthcare professionals, ensuring health themes are taught with both clinical insight and educational care.
In English, learners engage with symbol-supported stories and vocabulary around feelings and wellbeing.
Maths is brought to life through practical tasks such as counting steps, comparing sizes, and sequencing familiar routines like brushing teeth.
Science learning covers body parts, the five senses, nutrition, and environmental awareness, while communication development is supported through tools such as PECS, Makaton, and AAC boards to ensure every learner has a voice. Personal wellbeing is a cornerstone of the programme.
Topics such as “My Body, My Feelings” and “Calm Me Down” teach learners to name their emotions, recognise bodily sensations, and use strategies to self-regulate.
Daily life skills such as washing, dressing, and choosing healthy foods are taught through structured routines and multi-sensory activities. Learners are also introduced to basic safety concepts such as stranger awareness and appropriate touch, delivered in a developmentally appropriate and supported way.
Practical and creative learning is woven throughout the curriculum. Sessions include yoga, sensory play, guided movement and dance, and expressive arts.
Learners create “feelings monsters,” body maps, and weather charts to explore emotions and wellbeing.
Time in nature - through walks and gardening - further supports emotional regulation and a sense of calm, while music and role-play activities reinforce real-world scenarios like visiting the doctor or supporting a friend.
Vocational themes are introduced through familiar and accessible contexts. Learners explore “People Who Help Us” by dressing up and role-playing as community helpers, while the “Little Helpers” theme encourages them to assist with simple tasks like tidying or helping peers.
Through books, songs, and local stories, the “My Community” module connects children to the world around them, while “I Can Help” fosters early responsibility and pride in contributing. Thematic learning runs throughout the year, including celebrations of Neurodiversity, multi-sensory explorations of global religious festivals, and local initiatives like Kindness Week.
Learners also explore seasonal changes and how our environment impacts health and wellbeing.
The outcomes of this programme are both personal and measurable. Learners experience enhanced communication and emotional expression, gain foundational life skills, and begin building confidence in interacting with others.
These achievements are captured through observation, pupil portfolios, and progress tracking linked directly to each child’s EHCP targets.
Ultimately, this course lays the groundwork for greater independence, self-understanding, and meaningful future pathways.
