Course Outline
The Foundations for Health and Wellbeing programme is designed to support young people with SEND as they transition into adulthood, work, and independent living.
The course places a strong focus on developing independence, building self-management strategies, and promoting wellbeing.
Learners explore their identity, gain confidence in their abilities, and plan for their future with a structured yet flexible programme that supports individual needs and EHCP outcomes.
At its core, the programme also develops vocational awareness and readiness for health and social care roles, opening realistic and meaningful employment pathways. The academic content is led by qualified nurses and healthcare professionals who bring real-life context to the curriculum.
Functional English is taught through care-related tasks such as writing basic care plans, learning key vocabulary, and engaging in health-based role play.
In Functional Maths, learners practise skills through time-tabling, meal portioning, and reading health-related measurements like temperature.
Science for Health covers body systems, puberty education, nutrition, and essential first aid knowledge.
In addition, digital skills are integrated to support daily living and workplace readiness - such as accessing reliable health information, managing routines with reminders, and staying safe online.
Vocational learning is a key strand of the programme. Learners explore a variety of health and social care roles - such as carers, occupational therapists, and support workers - through immersive, practical learning.
Daily living skills are embedded throughout, helping learners to plan meals, understand medication routines, and use assistive technology.
Empathy, teamwork, and responsibility are developed through peer-support projects, while modules in personal safety, health awareness, and self-advocacy equip learners to make informed choices about their wellbeing.
Career tasters, guest speakers, mock interviews, and community visits help learners connect theory with real-world opportunities and explore what a future career could look like.
Emotional literacy and social development are interwoven throughout the curriculum. Learners are supported to understand and manage their emotions using approaches like the Zones of Regulation and basic CBT strategies.
Activities such as journaling, vision boarding, and guided self-reflection encourage personal growth and identity exploration. Topics such as puberty, consent, and relationships are covered in a sensitive and age-appropriate way, ensuring all learners feel informed and empowered.
The programme also follows a thematic learning calendar to ensure relevance and cultural awareness. Topics include Equality and Diversity, Mental Health Week, Faith and World Cultures, and simplified learning around government, rights, and responsibilities. Environmental and community wellbeing themes help learners connect with the wider world and understand their place in it.
