The Career Pathways for Health and Wellbeing programme is designed for young adults aged 16-25 with SEND who are preparing for employment, supported internships, or greater independence in adult life.
This course offers a clear pathway into the health and social care sector by enabling learners to complete the nationally recognised Care Certificate, while also developing real-world employability skills, life skills, and confidence in self-advocacy.
A core aim of the programme is to empower learners to understand and communicate their own care needs - giving them the tools to advocate for their rights, preferences, and wellbeing in both personal and professional contexts.
The curriculum is led by qualified nurses and health care professionals who bring industry expertise to a highly supportive learning environment.
Central to the programme is the Care Certificate, delivered in partnership with Skills for Health and fully adapted for learners with SEND. Learners complete all 15 standards, including topics such as Duty of Care, Communication, Equality and Diversity, and Basic Life Support (simulated).
Delivery is highly inclusive, using visual aids, easy-read resources, video modelling, role play, and practical repetition to ensure concepts are meaningful and accessible.
Learners build a supported portfolio of evidence using observation, photo journals, and hands-on activities.
In addition to the Care Certificate, learners develop functional skills for work, applying English, maths, and digital skills to real-life care settings. They practice writing care notes, managing simple timekeeping and budgeting, and using digital tools to support routines and communication. These skills are reinforced through embedded learning that relates directly to the expectations of a care or support role.
To support employment outcomes, the programme includes a strong focus on employability and workplace preparation. Learners receive guidance on building CVs and portfolios, participate in mock interviews, and attend confidence-boosting workshops that explore professional behaviour, teamwork, and emotional regulation in the workplace.
Travel training, time management, and uniform care are also integrated to help learners navigate adult responsibilities.
Learners gain hands-on insight into career pathways within the care sector, with guest speakers, visits to local care settings, and structured taster sessions.
Opportunities to explore different job types - such as dementia care, therapeutic play, or sensory support - help learners understand their own interests and strengths.
This personalised approach supports informed decisions about future training, employment, or voluntary roles.
A further component of the programme is wellbeing and independent living. Learners are supported to build healthy habits, manage stress, and develop skills in personal care, nutrition, and medication awareness (where appropriate). They also explore financial literacy, workplace rights, and disability confidence training to ensure they feel prepared and empowered to live and work independently.
Optional thematic learning days enhance the curriculum by addressing topics such as Neurodiversity in the Workplace, Co-production and Voice of the Learner, and Social Care Week. These sessions encourage inclusion, self-awareness, and community engagement.
