Course Outline
This programme introduces learners to the essential knowledge, skills, and behaviours needed for working with children from birth to 5 years in education and early years settings. It builds sector awareness, confidence, and employability skills while providing a foundation for progression into NCFE Level 2/3 qualifications or early years work placements. The course integrates theory with practical activities, ensuring learners understand the “why” and “how” behind good early years practice. Safeguarding, health and safety, and professional conduct are embedded throughout.
Course Modules
Learners will be able to: Describe different types of early years and education settings and the services they provide. Identify milestones in physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and language development. Explain safeguarding responsibilities and follow correct reporting processes. Recognise hazards and apply health and safety procedures in early years settings. Plan, resource, and deliver a safe and engaging play activity for a specific age group. Demonstrate key employability skills relevant to the early years workforce. Produce a portfolio of evidence to support progression in education or employment.

Student Expected Outcomes
y the end of the 6 weeks, learners will: Understand the range of early years and educational settings, and the roles within them. Recognise typical stages of child development from birth to 5 years. Know key safeguarding principles, types of abuse, and reporting procedures. Identify and minimise hazards to ensure children’s health, safety, and wellbeing. Plan and deliver simple play-based activities that support learning and development. Demonstrate professional behaviours including teamwork, time management, and effective communication. Reflect on personal skills and plan next steps in training or employment.
