Overview
This course is for those who have some prior knowledge of BSL, ideally those who have completed an Introduction to BSL course. The course will enable you to communicate using sign language at a basic level on a range of everyday topics in accordance with the National Language Standards at Level 1. The course is 33 weeks over the academic year, during which you will be formally assessed at British Sign Language Level 1. The Awarding organisation is Signature.
Course level and content
There is an expectation that you have some existing knowledge of BSL. Suitability for these course will be assessed by the tutor before the course starts. Enrolling on the course means you are committing to attending regularly and will be available to attend the assessments on the dates which will be given to you by the tutor in the first few weeks of the course. The approach will be friendly and informal. A range of teaching methods will be used which may include whole class activities, pair and small group work,role play, games and quizzes, and handouts.
What do you need?
Your tutor may suggest certain resources you could purchase to assist in your learning, but these would be optional. You should bring paper, pens and a ring binder to keep your notes and hand-outs in. Access to the internet at home, though not essential, will enable you to further your learning, as many free resources are available to language learners. More information on this will be given during the course. You will also need to set time aside to practice the skills and vocabularly covered on the course.

You can progress on to an accredited BSL Level 2 course and work towards nationally recognised qualifications.
