- Originally a Middle Eastern folk dance, Belly dancing has evolved and gained popularity all over the world as a performance art. With a focus on health and wellbeing, this course will give you the opportunity to learn how to perform belly dance steps and routines to traditional and popular music, whilst toning muscles, improving stamina and developing flexibility.

This course is a beginners class, learners can enrol on the course with little to no prior experience. The tutor will also provide modifications within the class to enable you to work at the correct level for your ability.
• Percussive movements, such as hip lifts/drops/twists/bumps, chest lifts/drops.
• Fluid movements, such as undulations, belly rolls, figure 8s, mayas, torso circles, big hip circles, umi circles, snake arms.
• Locomotive movements, such as Egyptian basic travelling step, Egyptian walk, undulation walk, grapevine.
• Shimmies, such as micro-knee bend shimmies, gentle shoulder shimmies, choo choo shimmies.
• Dance techniques: timing, musicality, stage presence, expression, pattern formation.
• Sequences and choreographed set routines.
• Brief history of Belly Dancing, including information about significant performers and choreographers - What do you need?

• Wear a comfortable top and trousers, leggings, pantaloons or circular skirt which allows flexibility of movement.
• You can dance in bare feet or wear belly dance slippers, foot undies, ballet shoes, jazz shoes or sports footwear that is flexible, non-slippery and supportive.
• Bring bottled water to hydrate and a sweat towel if required.
• A Coin hip belt will be provided by the tutor in class. - What can I do next?

Progression routes include enrolling on another dance courses such as Bollywood Dance – Beginners, Contemporary Dance – For Wellbeing, Line Dancing – Beginners, Lyrical Contemporary Dance – Beginners Plus and Ballet courses. There are opportunities to perform and participate in celebration events throughout the year.
