Overview
Flamenco culture originated in Andalusia, Spain, but has since become one of the icons of Spanish music, even Spanish culture in general. Flamenco is a song, music and dance style which is strongly influenced by the Gitanos, but which has its deeper roots in Moorish musical traditions. In class the technique will be taught to Flamenco music.
Flamenco dancing beginners is a course that focuses on health and wellbeing through learning technique to improve co-ordination, style, expression, and confidence through learning Flamenco dance. The aim is to be able to use learning from the class to build educational and personal skills in readiness for dancing outside of class and sharing knowledge learnt with others in the community.

ENGAGING WITH YOUR PERSONAL LEARNING RECORD (PLR) PAPERWORK
All community learning courses require learners to engage with PLR paperwork. At the start of the course, you will record and update your learning aims which you will work towards during the duration of the course. Your tutor will assess your learning throughout the beginning, mid-point and end of the course to provide written feedback and document your progression.
Course level and content
This course is a beginners class, learners can enrol on the course with little to no prior experience. The tutor will also provide modifications within the class to enable you to work at the correct level for your ability.

• Warm-up sequences to ensure that the mind and body are prepared for class. This includes engaging in phrases that warm and limber the muscles, improve overall strength and flexibility through technique.
• Dance techniques Flamenco hands and arm movements ‘Braceo’ and foot work ‘Taconeo’ There will be an opportunity to see how to play Castanets ‘Castañuelas’
• Dance techniques: Timing, musicality, stage presence, expression, pattern formation, elevation, floor work and improvisation.
• Dance Spanish terminology. You will have the opportunity to get familiar with some Spanish basic vocabulary.
• Brief history of Flamenco dance including some of the most famous songs and Flamenco dancers ‘bailaores’
What do you need?
• Wear comfortable clothes
• Non-slippery two-inch-thick heeled shoes, if you have them, or comfortable shoes
• Bottle of water
• Sweat towel if required
What can I do next?
Progression routes include enrolling on another dance courses such as Contemporary Dance – For Wellbeing, Line Dancing – Beginners, Lyrical Contemporary Dance – Beginners Plus and Ballet courses. There are opportunities to perform and participate in celebration events throughout the year.
