Overview
Not only will this course give you the chance to use your “jazz hands”, but you will also be taught sequences and rhythmic routines which involve the whole body: your head to your toes!
Modern jazz is characterised by leaps, turns and funky footwork. Although originally an interactive, improvised street dance, this style has evolved into a performance art, and it is this theatrical form of jazz dance which is known as modern jazz.
During classes you will be encouraged to work with others as part of a troupe performance, while developing your own unique style and responding expressively to different genres of music, resulting in an uplifting and energetic dance experience!
Course level and content
This course is for improvers with some experience in modern jazz.

• Jazz stretch warm-up sequences to ensure muscles are limbered and to improve strength, flexibility and technique
• Jazz isolation exercises to help warm-up specific body parts and improve coordination, control and flexibility
• Theatrical modern jazz performance routines, combining a variety of jazz steps, such as ball change, open turn, pivot, jazz pirouette, jazz pas de bourée, battement/jazz kick, chassé and jazz leap. (The steps taught are routine specific but will be made accessible to all, regardless of prior experience or start point; you will be encouraged to develop relative to the progress you have made over time and/or your starting point.)
• Dance techniques: timing, musicality, stage presence, expression, pattern formation
