Overview
Ballet is an artistic dance form that follows a formalised classical dance technique which encompasses graceful and precise movements. Ballet includes formalized steps and gestures that are set in intricate, flowing patterns to create expression through movement. This ballet course uses traditional and modern music to support the variety of choreographic phrases learnt.
You will learn the IDTA Ballet Syllabus to prepare you for Ballet exams.
Course level and content
This is an improvers course.

IMPROVERS - suitable for learners who have prior experience of Ballet Beginner Plus and are confident with the basic and developing steps. The course will build on learners’ previous knowledge, providing a more in depth look at correct technique and performance style. Learners will develop skills to sequence and perform set choreographed ballet routines as a group. Improver level barre work exercises include, developpe, soutenu, grand rond de jambe en l’air, battement frappe. Centre work exercises includes circular ports de bras, pirouettes and penche. Allegro exercises include petit batterie, sissones and grand jeté.

• Warm-up sequences to ensure that the mind and body are prepared for class. This includes engaging in phrases that warm and limber the muscles, improve overall strength and flexibility through technique.
• Ballet performance routines, giving you the opportunity to learn a variety of movement phrases and sequences that have a strong connection to the chosen music as part of a group class. Learners will develop fluidity of movement, moving gracefully to demonstrate technique. Learners will develop fluidity of movement; moving gracefully to demonstrate a variety of strengthening exercises and sequences that will improve overall health and wellbeing including fitness, balance and posture while learning the correct technique for ballet steps. Learners will develop skills to sequence and perform set choreographed ballet routines as a group.
• Dance techniques: Timing, musicality, stage presence, expression, pattern formation, elevation, floor work, improvisation and partner work.
• Brief history of Ballet, including the French terminology of movements i.e., plié, sautés etc.
What do you need?
For all Ballet classes:
• Ballet shoes, jazz shoes, or footwear that is flexible, non-slippery and supportive (purchase online or from a dance shop)
• Loose comfortable clothing
• Bottle of water
• Sweat towel if required
What can I do next?
Progression routes include enrolling on another dance courses such as Contemporary Dance – For Wellbeing, Line Dancing – Beginners, Lyrical Contemporary Dance – Beginners Plus and Ballet courses. There are opportunities to perform and participate in celebration events throughout the year.
