- Overview
- Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance which fuses elements of several different dance genres including modern jazz and classical ballet. This course aims to introduce contemporary dance technique whilst focusing on health and wellbeing through improving coordination, strength, body alignment and flexibility in a relaxed and friendly environment. Contemporary dancers strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements. During class you will have the opportunity to experiment with different techniques, steps and sequences while responding to different genres of music.
- Course level and content

This course is a beginners plus level, which means that it is suitable for beginners or those who have some experience but are not yet improvers. The tutor will provide modifications within the class to enable you to work at the correct level for your ability.
• Warm-up sequences to ensure that the mind and body are prepared for class. This includes engaging in phrases that warm and limber the muscles, improve overall strength and flexibility through technique.
• Contemporary performance routines, giving you the opportunity to learn a variety of movement phrases and sequences as part of a group class.
• Dance techniques: Timing, musicality, stage presence, expression, pattern formation, elevation, floor work, improvisation, and partner work.
• Brief history of Contemporary dance, including information about significant performers and choreographers. - What do you need?

For all Contemporary classes:
• Bare feet, Foot undies, ballet shoes, jazz shoes, or footwear that is flexible, non-slippery and supportive.
• Loose comfortable supportive clothing which allows flexibility of movement
• Bottle of water
• Sweat towel if required - What can I do next?

Progression routes include enrolling on another dance courses such as Lyrical Contemporary Dance – For Wellbeing, Line Dancing – Beginners and Ballet courses. There are opportunities to perform and participate in celebration events throughout the year.
