Course aim

The aim of this webinar is to equip carers, parents, and educators with practical knowledge and confidence to care for and celebrate Afro-Caribbean types in children.

Course outcomes
  • Overview of different Afro-Caribbean types – including do’s and don’ts (e.g., avoiding excessive use of relaxers, heat damage, and inappropriate products)

  • Recommended natural hair products

  • Step-by-step guide – from washing to drying, including frequency, detangling techniques, and protective nighttime routines (e.g., satin bonnets or pillowcases to

            reduce breakage and retain moisture)

  • Types of brushes and combs – with product links to suitable tools like wide-tooth combs, detangling brushes, and boar bristle brushes

  • Popular school-appropriate hairstyles – such as cornrows, box braids, Bantu knots, puffs, and twist-outs, which are protective and culturally affirming. These styles are widely accepted in UK schools and help children feel confident and proud of their heritage.

  • Encouraging pride in natural hair – tips on how carers can support children in embracing their identity, including using affirming language, celebrating cultural hairstyles, and avoiding negative comparisons.
