Creating an effective culture of safeguarding

Creating a Safeguarding Culture

Building a strong safeguarding culture in your early years setting requires shared values, consistent safe practices, professional curiosity, and the mindset that “it could happen here.”

Use the following reflective questions to evaluate and strengthen your safeguarding approach:

Do you…

  • Promote a whole-team approach where every member demonstrates safe practices and remains vigilant?
  • Lead by example, ensuring shared values and clear expectations across your team?
  • Implement robust safer recruitment processes and regularly check ongoing suitability?
  • Review policies and procedures to ensure they are clear, effective, and acted upon promptly?
  • Foster a reflective culture that continually develops safeguarding practices?
  • Empower staff to speak out without fear?
  • Ensure children and parents feel heard and valued?
  • Include safeguarding questions and scenarios in supervision and staff meetings?
  • Stay informed by reading updates from trusted organisations such as:
  • Encourage and participate in CPD opportunities between DSL training and refreshers. Is training clear, robust, and cascaded to all staff?
  • Make use of free training resources from Coventry Safeguarding Children Partnership, including one-minute guides?
  • Attend free Coventry DSL Network Meetings and termly briefings?
  • Put strategies in place to support your team’s well-being?
  • Seek advice and support when needed?

Remember: Ongoing reflection and a commitment to continuous improvement are key to embedding an effective safeguarding culture—one where the safety and wellbeing of every child is at the heart of everything you do.
