Following the resignation of Councillor Becky Gittins, a by-election has been called to fill the vacancy of Councillor for Earlsdon Ward. The election took place on Thursday 26 October 2023.

1. Nomination papers must be delivered to the Returning Officer, Council House, Earl Street, Coventry, CV1 5RR between Friday 10am and 4pm on any working day from the date of publication of this notice (excluding bank holidays) but no later than  4pm on Friday, 29 September 2023.

2. Nomination papers may be obtained from the offices of the Returning Officer, Council House, Earl Street, Coventry, CV1 5RR, during the times stated above.

3. If any election is contested the poll will take place on Thursday, 26 October 2023.

4. Applications to register to vote must reach the Electoral Registration Officer by 12 midnight on Tuesday 10 October 2023. Applications can be made online: https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote [https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote]  

5. Applications, amendments or cancellations of postal votes and amendments or cancellations of proxy votes must reach the Electoral Registration Officer at Council House, Earl Street, Coventry, CV1 5RR by 5 pm on Wednesday, 11 October 2023.

6. Applications for a Voter Authority Certificate or an Anonymous Elector’s Document valid for this election must reach the Electoral Registration Officer by 5pm on Wednesday 18 October 2023. Voter ID statistics - 26 October 2023

From May 2023, anyone voting in a polling station must present a valid form of photo ID [https://www.coventry.gov.uk/voterid]. This new requirement was introduced by the government through the Elections Act 2022.

The Electoral Commission [https://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/i-am-a/voter/voter-id] are responsible for reviewing the implementation of voter ID. After the 4 May elections we provided the Electoral Commission with information about how it was introduced in the City of Coventry, and they produced national figures which can be found on their website.

Although not required for by-elections we have collected the voter ID statistics for the election held on Thursday 26 October 2023 which are listed below.

Our data 

• Total number of polling station electors who applied for, but at least initially were not issued with, a ballot paper; 43
• The total number of polling station electors who were not issued with a ballot paper and who later returned with accepted ID and were issued with a ballot paper; 30
• The number of polling station electors who applied for but were not issued with a ballot paper by close of poll; 13
