Scrap metal dealers licence - Print version

To operate as a scrap metal dealer, operate a scrap metal site or trade as a motor salvage operator in Coventry, you will need to have a licence under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013.

There are two types of licence:

The Council is under a duty to protect the public funds it administers, and will use the information you have provided on this form for the prevention and deduction of fraud. It will also share this information with other bodies responsible for auditing, administering public funds and will use it for comparison across the Council and with external organisations for the prevention and the detection of fraud. Application process

Once a completed application is received, the licensing team will consider the application and consult with responsible authorities, such as the Police, the Environment Agency, Planning, Environmental Crime, Environmental Protection and Trading Standards and other local authorities to determine the suitability of the applicant.

If an application is refused then the applicant has the right to make a representation and the application may be heard by a full Committee.

The application will be processed within a reasonable time, but we will aim, where practicable, to complete this within 28 days.

Collector's licence   

• Grant - £450.00
• Renewal - £450.00

• Name change - £68.00

Length of licence

A licence lasts for 3 years.

Change of circumstances

The Council must be notified of any changes to the information provided in the application within 28 days.

Right of appeal

If a local council proposes to refuse an application, it must give the applicant notice of the proposed decision. The applicant has 14 days in which to make representations. When the local council has made a final decision, it provides a notice of the decision with reasons. The applicant has 21 days in which to appeal. The local council will advise the applicant how to do this.
