If you are a house building developer, you may wish to put up temporary signs for the development either by yourself or by an agent; such as a signage company.
To progress with installation of signs you will need to meet certain requirements and apply for a licence. Licences are granted for a six-month period; subsequent extensions are subject to review and sold percentage threshold.
Coventry City Council will work with developers or agents on their behalf to approve applications and where necessary suggest possible alternative locations if those requested are rejected as they are unsuitable.
All applications will be reviewed and returned within 15 working days from receipt. Feedback of the locations approved and those rejected will be provided to allow the application to reapply.
Please note: No signs to be placed on the public highway until consent from the Highway Authority has been given.

Fees
Application Fee £215
Per Sign Fee £50
Renewal Fee £120
Per Sign Fee £30
An invoice will be raised to the developer or agent on approval of a six-month licence.
Retrospective licence
If a housing developer or agent installs temporary signage without a licence in place, they will become subject to the Retrospective Licence fee (£1000). It is intended that this charge will act as a deterrent to housing developers and/or agents from ignoring the correct process.
- Retrospective Licence Fee £1000
- Per Sign Fee £75
- Per Sign Removal Fee £150
The developer or agent may choose to then keep the signage in place for a period of six months at a higher per sign cost than an applicant who follows the correct process.
For developers or agents whose signs are to be removed the cost per sign factors in the officer time required to administer this process as well as the costs that Coventry City Council may occur during the removal of these signs.
