Coventry not registering new ECTs from April 2023
Coventry LA is preparing to step back from directly providing Appropriate Body services in accordance with the DfE’s reforms. The DfE announced in 2022 its intention for future ECTs to be registered with and access services of a Teaching School HUB. The initial time frame of September 2023 was given which has now been changed to September 2024. In preparation for these changes in responsibility, Coventry LA will cease to register new ECTs from April 2023. Coventry LA is liaising with the Coventry and Central Warwickshire Teaching School Hub to support the transfer of all ECT services by July 2024. During this transition period Coventry LA will work with the TS Hub, to ensure a smooth process and a well-managed move for any ECTs who have been undertaking induction with Coventry since September 2022 and are part way through their induction. Timescales will be agreed with schools for transfers and plans put into place to manage the orderly transfer of ECTs effectively, whilst protecting the interests of the ECTs during this period.

From September 2023 all new ECTs must be registered with a Teaching School Hub Appropriate Body.
Teaching School Hubs will be the only providers of the Appropriate Body service for all new ECTs starting their induction from September 2023. Schools can register with any TSH. Coventry and Central Warwickshire TSH will act as the Appropriate Body within our locality. Induction tutors register ECTs on an ECF programme and with an Appropriate Body.
Induction at a glance
- All qualified teachers who are employed in a relevant school in England must, by law, complete an induction period of two years (prior to September 2021 the induction period was one year).
- Statutory induction is the bridge between initial teacher training and teaching career.
- ECTs are entitled to systematic professional and personal support which include support from a dedicated mentor, observation of ECT’s teaching, protected 10% ECT time for professional development, observing experienced teachers, frequent review of progress and assessment against Teachers Standards.
- ECTs must complete an induction period satisfactorily as there is no repeat.

Support available for ECT induction
- Coventry Local Authority acts as the Appropriate Body (AB) and monitors and supports the ECT induction process. The quality assurance of statutory induction, through the role of the appropriate body (AB), is important both for ensuring that schools provide adequate support for their ECTs, and that their assessment is fair and consistent across all institutions.
- Cathy Openshaw (ECT Induction Lead) is the named person at the appropriate body. Cathy provides support to schools on ECT induction statutory requirements and procedures, assessments and conducts the quality assurance of induction.
