Viewers have been fascinated by the close-up look at teenagers and their families in the care system in Coventry – and those working to help and support them.

The first episode on Wednesday told the story of Xorin, who, after being exploited as a young teen, is returning home to Coventry from a children's home in Wales to rebuild his life with mum Kelly.

We also met 19-year-old Annabelle, who is pregnant and determined to break the cycle of care that led to her being removed from her parents at the age of five.

Comments on Twitter after the first episode included:

  • Well that was rather brilliant.
  • #kids we are so proud that our children got to share their stories. Social work is a powerful and rewarding career if you are interested in a career with us in Coventry then come and meet us 25th May Coventry Council House 4-8pm Come and see what our social work academy offers
  • Coventry Children's Services I am so grateful you have made such an insightful documentary. This makes me look forward to qualifying next month even more!  #kids
  • Three quarters through the first episode of #kids and I think it's the most impressive representation of the challenges and privileges of being a social worker, and the most sensitive, thoughtful insight into the lives of young people unable to remain at home
  • Great sensitivity and balance from @Channel4 as usual, showing how we are all too quick to judge people whose lives we don't understand #kids
  • hopefully #Kids will really help bring about some change as people are able to see what reality of leaving care at such a young age is like from those currently experiencing it.
  • #kids the fact I'm qualifying as a social worker in a few months. This reminds me exactly why I'm doing what I'm doing and why I want to change the system
  • Not a surprising documentary for those who have lived experience. A documentary that needed to be made. hopefully a wider audience can see the issues faced by care experienced young people thanks to this series
  • #Kids is already showing that these are complex stories which don't have a right or wrong binary answer.
  • These #Kids are so much more impressive than the adults around them, so far.
  • As if someone had literally ripped my heart out. Natural parents on the day their child was removed.
  • Contrary to popular belief, the vast majority of parents love their children and want help to care for them. #KIDS
  • Really good to see #Kids tonight on @channel4. The young people came across as amazingly resilient & thoughtful and seemed to have learnt a lot about their time #incare. Reflecting on their youth and searching for answers. A positive story about the care system. Well done everyone.
  • Currently watching #KIDS on Channel4. Fascinating, emotional, powerful insight into the care system.
  • Can't believe everyone watching this programme isn't thinking what a lovely mum Annabelle is to Cody and wishing him a happy childhood with his mum #kids
  • Heart is breaking watching #kids - but have so much respect for Annabel- what an amazing lady, you go girl!
  • What a sad programme, it's hard enough for a kid growing up in a secure environment today, what chance do they stand? But what a mature 18-year-old Annabel is, really deserves a chance to make a better, happier more secure future #kids

The show returns on Wednesday (17 May) when viewers will meet Byron and Bayley as they negotiate living on their own for the first time as they leave the security and support of their carers.

The final episode on 24 May will see Havana seek information on her birth father and Kane question why he went into care.
