Coventry’s work to help young people leaving care understand their background and their journey was highlighted in this week’s episode of Channel 4’s Kids.

Wednesday’s final episode looked at the story of Kane, who had questions about why he went into the care system.

Care leavers are often unclear about the reasons why they go into care.

Matt Clayton, Strategic Lead – Looked After Children (Practice), at Coventry City Council, said: “As they navigate through the care system, which can be disruptive, complicated, and, at times, sadly traumatic, the initial reason and understanding can be lost, changed and become vague.

“Without a clear narrative about their experience and life story, and with unanswered questions, there can be a significant impact on their self-worth, relationships and sense of belonging.

“As a local authority, we want to help and support care leavers to understand their journey and life story and ensure good support is in place to be able to access their records.

“Coventry has worked with the Rees Foundation to ensure practitioners are able to support children in care and care leavers through this journey of accessing their records and ensuring they have the emotional support when doing this.”

Channel 4’s Kids showed the work of Coventry’s Children’s Services’ teams over three episodes.

All episodes are now available to watch on catch-up.
