West Midlands Police has written to youth groups and other organisations to help raise awareness of a new zombie knife legislation and surrender scheme.
New laws have come into force, effectively outlawing zombie-style knives.
Before the new laws are enforced, a national Surrender and Compensation Scheme will run until Monday 23 September 2024.
The surrender scheme allows people to hand in knives that fall within the new legislation at police stations, in return for an application for compensation.
Cllr Abdul Salam Khan, Deputy Leader of Coventry City Council, said: “It’s absolutely vital that steps are taken to legislate against the use of these knives. We also need to continue with ongoing education and awareness about the impact that knife crime can have on families and communities.
“I know that young people across the city and West Midlands are keen to spark conversations that can lead to more collaboration and positive action, and have set out a new though provoking campaign on this.
“It’s really important we look at every way to combat the problem of knife crime.”
The legislation outlaws the manufacture, supply, sale, possession and importation of zombie-style knives’ and ‘zombie-style machetes, from 24 September 2024.
