Coventry City Council has won Connected Britain Digital Council of the Year 2025 - for the second year in a row.

Coventry received the award at the Connected Britain Conference last week where the awards judges highlighted how Coventry is focused on making the city a place with high level digital capabilities and is close to being the highest full fibre city in the UK.

The success in this year’s awards follows on from last year’s, when the Council, partners, and city were recognised for work including opening a Material Recycling Facility which uses AI to sort and process recyclable waste; creating a new smart water network; establishing a Strategic Energy Partnership with E.ON; and more.

As well Winning the title Digital Council of the Year, the Council was named as a finalist in The Smart Places Award while its #CovConnects programme was also made the shortlist in the Community Improvement Award

The Council's plans involve investing over £10million to upgrade the city's streetlighting to LED technology, and the Council has also received a Platinum award from GeoPLace for address and street data.

During 2024 a DSIT Funded 5G Innovation Region scheme introduced Technology Enabled Care (TEC) in residents' homes, and the city aims to have the UK's first all-electric bus fleet.

Coventry City Council has also recently established a new partnership with Virgin Media O2 that will help thousands more Coventry residents get online and find a local solution for recycling and reusing electronic waste.

Cllr Richard Brown, Cabinet Member for Finance, said: "Coventry performs really well in terms of UK full-fibre coverage. The city is both top in the West Midlands and joint third in the UK.

“We are proud of being one of the best digitally connected cities in the UK, and our work across a number of areas includes #CovConnects which has had a massive impact on the city in overcoming the digital divide, providing more than 4700 devices to those in need, across 240 digital inclusion schemes.

“So, this latest award is recognition for all our efforts.”
