Key speakers, Lord Mayor, Chief Executive and Deputy Leader standing to the right of a banner showing a flame and candles lit, that reads Holocaust Memorial Day

Thank you to everyone who joined us in commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day yesterday.

The event helps us remember the millions of people murdered during the Holocaust under Nazi persecution as well as more recent genocides, such as Rwanda, Bosnia, Afghanistan, Syria, and Darfur and Cambodia.

Our main speaker, Jeanette Marx, shared her mother’s experience of being transported to concentration camps from her home and students from local secondary schools participated in poetry and performances, along with other local organisations and groups.

The Lord Mayor, Councillor Rachel Lancaster, who spoke at the event, said:

“This day teaches us all that genocide does not just happen. It is a steady process which starts if discrimination, racism and hatred are not checked and prevented.

"It helps us to learn about the past, empathise more with people today, and work to build a better future.

"Persecution must be resisted every day and the language of hatred must be challenged by us all.  I am so proud of the part Coventry is playing in that work."
