A Coventry chippy is providing free meals for homeless men who are staying in temporary accommodation while they get back on their feet.

Each month Marina Fish Bar in Willenhall provides chip suppers for all residents staying at a supported temporary accommodation building, called New Leaf House in Willenhall.

New Leaf House provides 34 beds along with support services for people who face a range of health issues and have struggled to stay in accommodation. A number of the residents are former rough sleepers.

The amazing gesture by Marina Fish Bar, is simply because the owners believe in supporting people in difficult times.

Natassa and Melios Trattou, who own and run the Marina Fish Bar, said: “We just like to give back to the community. It’s just the way we were brought up. Any of us could face difficulties in life that can cause all sorts of issues as well as homelessness. We think it’s important to be kind.

“We approached New Leaf House, and they have been really grateful for the support.”

Across all the city there are 145 beds across the city providing supported temporary accommodation to people with complex needs. The Council provided supported temporary accommodation to more than 450 single people last year.

Cllr Naeem Akhtar, Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, said: “The support of businesses like Marina Fish Bar I think it is so amazing. I also know that the church and local school have also supported residents at New Leaf House in lots of other ways, too.”

"This type of accommodation is vital. It offers a safe place for people including army veterans. and often for people who would otherwise be sleeping on the streets.

“The staff there are so compassionate and supportive. It’s a vital service that the Council is committed to providing.”
