With Local Elections happening on May 7, Coventry residents are being urged to make sure they are ready to have their say by registering to vote.

Registering is quick, simple and can be done now by going to the Government's website. If you’re already registered at your current address, you do not need to register again.

People can vote in a variety of ways – in person, by post or by proxy which is where they appoint someone they trust to vote in their place.

The important deadlines you need to know for this year’s elections are:

  • Registering to vote must be done by 20 April at 11:59pm
  • Postal vote applications must be done by 21 April at 5pm
  • Proxy vote applications must be done by 28 April at 5pm
  • Polling day takes place on the 7 May

From repairing roads and looking after the homeless to helping people find employment, the Council delivers services residents use every day. Local elections represent a chance for residents to shape these services and the future of our city.

Julie Newman, Returning Officer and Electoral Registration Officer at Coventry City Council said: “Local elections are fast approaching and we’re urging everyone in Coventry to make sure they can take part.

“If anyone has any issues with registering, I encourage them to contact our Electoral Services Team on 024 7683 3034 or pop into one of our Libraries where one of officers will happily assist you.”

Anybody voting in a polling station at those elections will be required to show an accepted form of photographic ID. To see what ID is acceptable, please visit our Elections webpages.

The Council wants to ensure that everyone with a disability can vote with ease and in comfort. As a result, we've been making changes to our polling stations to make them accessible for everyone. These changes include providing assistive technology, wheelchair access to all polling stations and much more. All the details can be found on our accessibility at elections webpages.
