The Council, in partnership with key local organisations, was proud to announce the launch of its “Best Start in Life” Strategy recently with professionals and practitioners across the city. This comprehensive initiative is built around an action plan to improve child development and health and educational outcomes for all children, and their families, from birth to five years.
Cllr Mal Mutton, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “Best Start in Life is a vitally important programme with a clear vision of supporting all our children, parents, and carers, with a focus on early intervention, health and wellbeing, and reducing inequalities across the city. When children get the best start, they have the best chance to succeed. By working together with families, communities and partners, we can create a Coventry where every child is able to thrive.”
Jane Moffat, Early Help Operational Lead, added: “Bold Start, Bright Futures is Coventry’s commitment to ensuring that every child begins life with the strongest possible foundations. Our vision is that every child will be safe, healthy, curious, confident and ready to thrive at school by age five, regardless of background, circumstance or need.”
The Best Start in Life Strategy reflects the shared commitment of local services - including health, education, voluntary agencies, and community groups - to work together to deliver meaningful, lasting impact for Coventry families.
It prioritises giving every child the opportunity to thrive, recognising that the early years are critical in shaping lifelong outcomes. Key areas of focus include improving children’s school readiness; improving maternal and infant health; supporting strong parent-infant relationships; enhancing early education and childcare provision; identifying and addressing additional needs early; and reducing health and developmental inequalities.
At the centre of the strategy are Coventry’s Best Start Family Hubs, which play a vital role in delivering accessible, joined-up support for families.
These hubs act as a single point of access for families with children from conception to age 19 (or up to 25 for those with additional needs), providing guidance, services, and early help in welcoming community-based settings. They also co-deliver a wide range of services in the community and through the digital offer at www.coventryfamilies.co.uk
