Coventry City Council is inviting residents to take part in a programme of free events to celebrate Black History Month.

The programme brings together a variety of activities, including family-friendly events, live entertainment, culture, creativity and thought-provoking discussions.

The first event takes place on Friday 16 October, with a beginner-friendly Sip and Paint session at Elle’s, combining art, mocktails and a live DJ celebrating Black music and culture.

On Saturday 24 October, people can visit Priory Visitor Centre to watch a screening of Beach Inna Bondage: The Fight for Jamaica’s Coastline, followed by a hybrid panel discussion with contributors from Jamaica.

On Wednesday 28 October, families can visit Market Way in the city centre to take part in Creative Roots, which features outdoor arts and crafts, African and Caribbean-inspired creative activities, African masks, face painting and henna.

The final event will be a Quiz Night and Open Mic on Saturday 31 October. It will be an informal evening, combining Black history and culture quiz rounds with local music, poetry and spoken-word performances.

Councillor John McNicholas, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Cohesion, said: “Black History Month gives us an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the history, heritage and culture of Black communities. These events offer activities for residents of all ages, bringing people together to enjoy, share and learn from each other, as an excellent example of the many communities that live, work and study in Coventry.”

For Sip and Paint, Beach Inna Bondage and the Quiz Night and Open Mic, you can book online through the Council’s website.

Places are available on a first-come, first-served basis. No booking is required for Creative Roots.
