Lord Mayor on left in mayoral chains presents Inderjit and Avtar with a Good Citizen award in front of a fireplace in a wood panelled room

Two Coventry residents have been recognised with Good Citizen Awards for their dedication to supporting vulnerable people.

Inderjit Jugdy and Avtar Kaur, founders of Langar Aid in Coventry, have been selected for the Award in recognition of more than a decade of service to homeless, isolated and vulnerable people across the city.

Through their work at Langar Aid, they have helped provide meals, food packs and practical support to those in need, whilst also building strong partnerships with organisations that support disadvantaged communities.  Inderjit and Avtar have brought communities together and helped develop interfaith initiatives, including a New Year's Day community meal hosted in partnership with Coventry Cathedral.

Over the last 10 years, Langar Aid has grown from a local initiative into a vital source of support, providing meals five evenings a week, supplying food to local schools and helping refugee families settle into the community. Their work has been driven by a commitment to ensuring that nobody in Coventry goes hungry.

Councillor Roger Bailey, Lord Mayor of Coventry, said:

"The Good Citizen Award recognises individuals who go above and beyond to make Coventry a better place and Inderjit Jugdy and Avtar Kaur are truly deserving recipients.

"For more than a decade they have devoted their time, energy and compassion to supporting people facing hardship, ensuring that thousands of residents have had access to food, support and a sense of belonging when they needed it most.

"Their work through Langar Aid embodies the very best of Coventry's values of kindness, inclusion and community spirit. They have made a lasting difference to the lives of countless people, not only in our city but around the world, and it is a privilege to recognise their outstanding contribution with this award."

Beyond their local work, Inderjit has participated in humanitarian missions in Nigeria, Malawi, India and Morocco, while Avtar has contributed to relief efforts in Turkey and Gaza.

Their contribution has previously been recognised through several prestigious honours, including the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service, the High Sheriff Award of Merit and the West Midlands Police Award for Community Work.
