Design Code Questionnaire

A Design Code is a set of simple, practical guidelines that help shape the appearance and layout of new developments. It explains what good design should look like in Coventry and provides clear explanations for buildings, streets and public spaces.

A Design code does not replace existing planning policies or Supplementary Planning Documents (SPDs). Instead, it sits alongside these documents and supports them by giving more detailed advice on matters such as building height and form, street layouts, public spaces, materials and landscaping, The aim is to ensure that new development fits well within its surrounding and contributes positively to the local area.

Developers and designers can use the Design Code when preparing proposals, and the Council will use it when assessing planning applications. This helps create a more consistent approach to design and supports high-quality development across the city.

As Coventry continues to grow and change, the Design Code will help guide development so that it reflects the city’s character, supports safe and accessible places, and delivers well-designed neighbourhoods and public spaces.
