Coventry trials greener road materials in Broad Lane resurfacing work
Coventry is leading the way in the UK’s journey toward more sustainable roads, with an innovative resurfacing project set to begin this summer on Broad Lane.
The scheme is part of a wider £4 million programme funded by the Department for Transport and delivered in partnership with Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) and will take place on:
- Broad Lane – from the A45 to Farcroft Avenue
- Willenhall Lane – from Langbank Avenue to Deerdale Way
The Broad Lane resurfacing project will take place from Monday 4 August to Friday 12 September 2025, covering the stretch from the A45 to Farcroft Avenue.
This trial forms part of the Centre of Excellence for Decarbonising Roads (CEDR) and is aimed at testing eco-friendly materials in real-world conditions. These include:
- Graphene-enhanced asphalt – longer-lasting and reduces maintenance costs
- Biogenic binders – made from plant-based sources as a low-carbon alternative to traditional bitumen
- Carbon-negative aggregates – help offset emissions from road construction
The goal is to evaluate the environmental performance, durability, and cost of these materials to guide future road maintenance across the UK.
The Broad Lane resurfacing will be completed in five phases, with work taking place Monday to Friday, from 8am to 5pm. Each section of the road will reopen at the end of each working day.
