About the Social Work Academy

What is the Social Work Academy (SWA)?

Coventry’s Social Work Academy is an award-winning initiative that offers children and family social work practitioners a pathway through their career with Coventry Children's Services, by creating an environment that supports stability and continuing professional development. The Social Work Academy supports Newly Qualified Social Workers throughout their first 12 months of practice in completing their Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE). Newly Qualified Social Workers are based in the Social Work Academy for the first 6 months, spending two days per week with their dedicated host teams, and the rest of their week based in the Social Work Academy. After completing the first six months, Newly Qualified Social Workers transition permanently to their host teams. Across their Assessed and Supported Year in Employment, the Newly Qualified Social Workers benefit from continued professional development, support and mentoring, where they develop and embed best practice to achieve better outcomes for children and families living in the city.

Information for Newly Qualified Social Workers (NQSWs)

The Social Work Academy offers Newly Qualified Social Workers a positive and strong induction into statutory children’s social work, promoting the development in the quality, consistency and effectiveness of social work practice to ensure that children’s outcomes are positive.

We want Newly Qualified Social Workers to become confident in the work they deliver through a combination of the high levels of challenge and a highly supportive network around them to enable them to do their job well.

Newly Qualified Social Workers will feel valued and part of Coventry Children’s Services, with 6 months based within the Social Work Academy alongside spending time with their host team, shadowing practice and developing a good understanding of the practice realities in Coventry.

The learning environment of the Social Work Academy affords Newly Qualified Social Workers high levels of supervision, particularly at the early stages, and an individual development plan as a part of their Assessed and Supported Year in Employment.

Newly Qualified Social Workers will also be able to connect with the West Midlands Teaching Partnership, Research in Practice, and receive coaching, mentoring and support through the Social Work Academy Team to assist them in their transition from student to professional practice.

Our Assessed and Supported Year in Employment programme has varying entry points throughout the year. Newly Qualified Social Workers will be supported throughout their Assessed and Supported Year in Employment, having dedicated time with the Social Work Academy team developing their skills and embedding their learning. This comes in the form of joint working with other social workers, protected learning time and outreach from the Academy Team when Newly Qualified Social Workers transition into their teams.

The year will be exciting and challenging, with a revolutionary approach to learning and development. The Social Work Academy will enable Newly Qualified Social Workers to mature from students into safe, skilful and knowledgeable social work practitioners, who will feel confident in both their practice and decision making. Newly Qualified Social Workers are encouraged to continue their development beyond the Social Work Academy by role modelling and sharing best practice throughout the wider workforce
