Coventry LED streetlighting upgrade â what residents need to knowÂ
A £9.96 million programme to upgrade 28,847 streetlights to LEDâ¯representing a major modernisation of the city’s lighting, which starts this year and will take about 2 years to complete.
Here’s everything you need to know while the work is underway:
What’s happening?
- old streetlight lanterns will be replaced with modern, energy-efficient LED lanterns specifically designed for your street
- works will commence in November 2025 starting with St Michael's ward and working outwards
- wards lists are based on the existing ward boundaries at the start of the programme
- heritage lanterns or lanterns already upgraded to LED are excluded from this project
What to expect
- majority of works will be conducted during the daytime (some works may be carried out early in the morning) and each lantern takes up to 30 minutes to upgrade
- once installed the new LED lantern will be on for short period of time during the daytime to allow for testing
- disruption from these mobile works will be kept to a minimum
- if you live on a residential road and we are working outside your home, there may be a slight disturbance for a short period
- when we’re working on a main road, we may need close a lane to carry out the work. If we do, we’ll put up signs on the roads
- there may be occasions where a whole street cannot be completed in the same visit due to lantern availability. The remaining ones will be prioritised
Why it matters and impact on your property
Why it matters
- lower energy use
- reduced carbon emissions – equivalent to taking 268 cars off the road.
- longer-lasting lights that require less maintenance – up to 4 times longer than the current lanterns, providing savings of £1.7m over the next 10 years
Impact on your property
- street lighting is only intended to light the public highway, not private drives or gardens.
- a successful LED trial has already been implemented in the Hillfields area, which has received positive feedback from residents
- lanterns will initially be installed at 100% output, then dimmed to the agreed levels within 7 working days (9 calendar days)
- glare shields previously installed may no longer be required – the upgraded lantern profile means there is less wasted light
- it is natural for eyes to adjust to the new whiter light over a few weeks, so we ask that residents wait for two weeks to allow for this before deciding whether to contact us.⯠However, if you are still experiencing any problems with glare 2 weeks after the upgrade to LED lanterns, pleaseâ¯contact the team at Balfour Beattyâ¯by email – enquiries@lightingcoventry.com [mailto:enquiries@lightingcoventry.com]

- Planned Ward (s) for next month: St Michaels, Sherbourne
- Completed Wards: (will be updated as works progress)
A street-by-street breakdown of installations per quarter will be available shortly on the Balfour Beatty website.
Some streets are not fully included in this LED upgrade. This may be because:
- certain lanterns have already been upgraded to LED in previous projects
- some lanterns are scheduled for future upgrades
- heritage lanterns are not included in this project and may be upgraded where appropriate in the future
A detailed list of affected streets is available for download and/or viewing on the 'List of Streets Partly or Fully Excluded [https://www.coventry.gov.uk/street-scene/coventry-led-streetlighting-upgrade/4]' page.
We appreciate your patience and cooperation throughout this project as we upgrade the streetlights across the city.
