Jacobs Journey

Jacob's Journey

The Heart of Coventry Alternative Provision

Every young person has a story. Every journey matters.

At Coventry Alternative Provision (CAP), we believe that every young person deserves to feel valued, understood and supported to achieve their full potential. Every child arrives with their own experiences, strengths, aspirations and challenges. Their journey is unique, and so should the support they receive.

Jacob’s Journey underpins everything we do. It provides the shared vision, values and approach that shape the Coventry Alternative Provision Framework, ensuring every decision is centred on the needs of the young person.

Jacob’s Journey is not a programme or a single pathway. It is our commitment that every young person will be known, supported and empowered to achieve positive, sustainable outcomes.

What is Jacob’s Journey?

Jacob’s Journey represents every young person who accesses Coventry Alternative Provision.

It recognises that success is about much more than qualifications. Success is built through positive relationships, trust, confidence, resilience, opportunity and a genuine sense of belonging.

Every interaction, every intervention and every partnership should move a young person one step closer to achieving their aspirations.

Whether a young person requires early intervention, targeted support or transitional specialist provision, Jacob’s Journey provides the common thread that connects every part of our work.

Our Vision

Our vision is simple:

Every young person will experience a personalised journey where they feel they belong, believe in themselves, achieve their potential and successfully transition into the next stage of education, employment or adulthood.

The Belonging Strategy

At the heart of Jacob’s Journey sits our Belonging Strategy.

Research consistently shows that a strong sense of belonging improves attendance, engagement, wellbeing, behaviour and educational achievement. Young people who feel connected are more likely to participate, develop resilience and succeed.

For this reason, belonging is not viewed as an outcome—it is the foundation upon which every positive outcome is built.

Our strategy is built around four commitments.

Belong

  • Every young person deserves to feel safe, welcomed and accepted.
  • We create environments where children feel respected, listened to and valued for who they are.
  • Belonging starts with relationships.

Believe

  • When young people experience genuine belief from trusted adults, they begin to believe in themselves.
  • We help young people recognise their strengths, build confidence and develop aspirations for their future.
  • High expectations, encouragement and positive relationships enable confidence to grow.

Achieve

  • Achievement looks different for every young person.
  • For some it may be improved attendance.
  • For others it may be overcoming anxiety, rebuilding relationships, gaining qualifications or preparing for employment.
  • Our role is to provide personalised learning, therapeutic support and meaningful opportunities that enable every young person to succeed.

Belong Again

  • Every journey leads somewhere.
  • Whether returning to mainstream education, progressing into specialist provision or moving into Post-16 education, employment or training, our aim is that every young person leaves Coventry Alternative Provision ready to belong within their next community.
  • Jacob’s Journey is about creating successful transitions that last.

Supporting every journey

Jacob’s Journey underpins the Coventry Alternative Provision Framework.

Regardless of where a young person enters the framework, the principles remain the same.

  • Universal Support
  • Strong inclusive practice, early intervention and positive relationships help prevent barriers from escalating and keep young people engaged in learning.
  • Targeted Support
  • Where additional needs emerge, personalised interventions provide focused support to overcome barriers, improve engagement and build resilience.
  • Transitional Specialist Support
  • For young people with the most complex needs, specialist provision, therapeutic interventions and coordinated multi-agency support provide intensive personalised pathways that prepare them for positive futures

Young people can move between levels of support as their needs change, ensuring provision remains flexible, responsive and centred around the individual.

Working together around every young person

Jacob’s Journey is built upon collaboration.

Every successful journey requires professionals, families and communities working together around the young person.

This includes:

  • Schools, as the substantive educator and key educational partner.
  • Coventry Alternative Provision, coordinating placements, quality assurance and strategic oversight.
  • Parents, carers and families, whose knowledge and encouragement are fundamental to success.
  • Training providers and specialist partners delivering personalised learning and targeted interventions.
  • Therapeutic services and wider agencies providing additional expertise where required.
  • Employers, colleges and community organisations creating opportunities beyond school.

By working together, we provide consistent, joined-up support that keeps the young person at the centre of every decision.

Our Principles

Everything we do through Jacob’s Journey is guided by six principles.

  • Every decision begins with the individual.
